Local Dishes to Seek Out (or request from your onboard chef)
Pissaladière
A decadent tart native to the city of Nice, this is not to be missed. Softly caramelized onions are layered on a crisp, buttery pastry and adorned with top-quality anchovies and olives. Salty, rich, and perfect for breakfast or a snack on the go.
Bouillabaisse
A traditional preparation of the area’s bounty, this dish highlights the excellent seafood available along this coastline. Cooked with fragrant saffron and orange zest, this is an excellent companion to local white wines with rich texture.
Salad Niçoise
This dish is replicated the world over, but nothing beats the real deal in the city where it came from! Seared tuna fillet, creamy soft boiled eggs and green beans with a pure vinaigrette to cut through everything. Made for a glass of frosty rosé.
Tarte Tropézienne
Originally conceived by Alexandre Micka, this iconic dessert consists of brioche coated with sugar crystals, filled with custard and buttercream. A must to finish any meal, or an afternoon treat.
What Grows Together Goes Together
Looking for the best pairing for these dishes and the local delights? Look no further than the incredible vinous offerings of the surroundings. For seafood, choose the unctuous local whites or salty rosés, chilled just slightly. For heartier braises and meat, lean towards the often-underrated local red wines, produced from blends of grapes and full of structure and bold flavour.
The Best Restaurants by City
Nice
This city teems with excellent bistros and is perfect for casual lunches and wine bar nights. Café des Musiciens is renowned for its excellent, hearty menu with wide-ranging influences and humble food. For an intriguing, Japanese-influenced menu, look no further than Les Agitateurs, with one Michelin Star under its belt. L’Epicerie Georges is a tiny, old-school bistro with very few tables, so book well in advance.
Saint-Tropez
The luxury hotel Cheval Blanc holds court here, with its excellent restaurant La Vague d’Or boasting three Michelin stars and providing show-stopping luxury and old-school French hospitality.
Menton
With global renown, chef Mauro Colagreco’s Mirazur was named the best restaurant in the world in 2019. Duly awarded three Michelin stars, the dining room looks straight out onto the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and the restaurant’s own garden. Think a winding journey through the best produce the region has to offer, with interesting local wines to match.
Antibes
If you don’t end up in Menton, Mauro Colagreco’s two outposts Miraé and Amarines offer his outstanding cooking in a more relaxed atmosphere, with both locations harboring excellent wine lists to boot.
N.B. Many of these restaurants fill up months in advance, so make sure you confer with your crew to check availability, or plan reservations when you book your trip.
Casual or Fine-Dining?
There is a great balance of these two concepts along the French Riviera, and if you really want to get a sense of the history, make sure you eat at some classic bistros. This will give you an insight into the famed dishes of the region. These restaurants are bustling, fun places to jump into, but be prepared to sit in close proximity to other guests.
If you want white tablecloths, a personal sommelier, and detailed food, fine dining is the best choice. These restaurants work to highlight the areas that they are situated in, sourcing the best local produce so you can get a clear picture of what the French Riviera does best.
Best Bars to Enjoy a Nightcap
Looking to find a cosy spot for a drink, or a bustling strip of nightlife? There are plenty of opportunities in the French Riviera.
In Saint-Tropez, the beaches are lined with luxury clubs with fantastic music and excellent drinks. Bagatelle, Le Gaïo and L’Opéra are all excellent options for partying into the night.
In Nice, Delano Cocktailbar has a world-class backbar and a striking interior for sipping post dinner. Go to Babel Babel for a pre-dinner glass of bubbles, and return for a round of drinks when the sun sets.
In the old town of Antibes, Absinthe Bar has a beautiful, old-school interior and a focus on the famous green fairy. Place de Rhum has an incredible selection of rums from all around the world, and the drinks are second to none.
