South of France Yacht Charter FAQ

Clear, practical answers to the questions clients ask before booking a French Riviera yacht charter.

Cost, APA & Payments

How much does a South of France yacht charter cost?

A crewed South of France yacht charter usually starts around EUR 50,000 per week and can rise well beyond EUR 500,000 for large motor yachts, superyachts, and event weeks. The real budget is the base charter fee plus VAT, APA, and crew gratuity.

What is included in the charter fee?

The charter fee normally covers the yacht, crew, standard onboard equipment, and the yacht's insurance. Food, drinks, fuel, dockage, VAT, gratuity, and special requests are usually handled separately.

What is APA?

APA is the Advance Provisioning Allowance. It is a pre-paid expense account used for variable costs such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees, and special requests. Any unused APA is returned after the charter.

Is VAT included in the yacht price?

Usually no. In France and Monaco, VAT is generally added to the charter fee, and the exact treatment can depend on the contract, itinerary, and embarkation point. We confirm this before clients sign.

When are yacht charter payments due?

Payment schedules vary by contract and timing, but most charters require a deposit to secure the yacht and the final balance before embarkation. APA is usually paid before the charter as well.

Can we reduce the total charter cost?

Sometimes. The biggest levers are yacht choice, dates, route, fuel use, marina plans, and whether a different start or end point makes sense. We do not recommend saving money in a way that weakens the trip.

Planning & Timing

What is the best time to charter?

For most clients, June and September offer the best balance of weather, atmosphere, and easier logistics. July and August are warmer and livelier, but also busier and less forgiving.

How far in advance should we book?

For peak summer, Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, and the best large yachts, we recommend starting as early as possible. If your dates are flexible, strong options can still appear closer in.

Can we charter a yacht for one day?

Day charters exist, but the best crewed yacht inventory is usually priced and contracted for multi-day or weekly charters. For high-end yachts, a week is often the cleanest structure.

Is the South of France good for a first yacht charter?

Yes, if the itinerary is planned realistically. The Riviera works well for first-timers because distances are manageable, shore options are excellent, and brokers can tailor the pace to the group.

Destinations & Itineraries

Where should we start?

Antibes is often the most practical operational base. Cannes is better for glamour and events, Monaco for prestige or Grand Prix briefs, and Nice for airport convenience.

Compare Antibes and Cannes

Can we include Monaco?

Yes. We often include Monaco as a lunch stop, overnight, event base, or final port. It should be added because it fits the brief, not just because it is famous.

Can we include Saint-Tropez?

Yes, and for many clients it is a highlight. Saint-Tropez works best when beach clubs, lunches, shopping, and summer atmosphere are part of the reason for chartering.

Can we charter from France to Corsica or Sardinia?

Yes, for the right yacht and schedule. It usually needs more planning than a pure Riviera week because distances, fuel, weather, and tax structure matter more.

Yachts & Onboard Life

Should we choose a motor yacht, sailing yacht, or catamaran?

Most South of France clients choose motor yachts because they fit the Riviera's port-to-port rhythm. Catamarans can work well for space and stability, while sailing yachts suit clients who want the sailing experience itself.

What are the best superyachts in the South of France?

The best yacht depends on dates, guest count, cabin layout, crew, toys, and whether you want speed, volume, prestige, or event presence. We shortlist from actual availability, not just brochures.

Can we charter a yacht with a Jacuzzi or water toys?

Yes. Many Riviera yachts carry Jet Skis, seabobs, inflatable platforms, towables, and sometimes a Jacuzzi. Toy use depends on the yacht, licensing, local rules, and captain approval.

Are yachts child-friendly?

Many are, but not all in the same way. For families, we look closely at crew experience, deck safety, cabin layout, water toys, stabilizers, and how relaxed the itinerary should be.

Crew, Food & Preferences

What does the crew do?

The crew runs the yacht, plans the daily rhythm, prepares meals, manages service, launches water toys, keeps the vessel safe, and quietly handles many details clients never see.

What is a preference sheet?

The preference sheet tells the crew what you like: food, drinks, allergies, dietary needs, activities, sleeping preferences, celebrations, and anything that helps them personalize the week.

Can the chef accommodate dietary requests?

Usually yes, especially when we give the crew clear information early. The more specific the request, the more useful it is to tell us before provisioning begins.

Can the crew arrange restaurants and beach clubs?

Yes, but the best Riviera venues often need advance planning. We recommend deciding which lunches, beach clubs, and evenings matter most before the itinerary is finalized.

Weather, Safety & Rules

What happens if the weather is bad?

The captain will adjust the plan for safety and comfort. That can mean changing anchorages, shortening a passage, staying in port, or choosing a more protected part of the coast.

Can the captain change the itinerary?

Yes. The itinerary is flexible, but the captain has final authority on safety, weather, and the yacht. A good crew will explain the options and keep the trip feeling smooth.

Do we need travel or cancellation insurance?

We strongly recommend discussing insurance before booking. A yacht charter is a significant commitment, and insurance can protect against some situations outside your control.

What if the yacht has a technical issue?

The contract and circumstances matter. The captain, manager, owner, and broker work through the practical options, which may include repairs, altered plans, or another solution where available.

Events & Special Occasions

Can we charter for Monaco Grand Prix?

Yes, but it needs early planning. Berths, pricing, viewing position, guest access, and hospitality goals all change the yacht choice.

See Monaco Grand Prix charters

Can we charter for Cannes Film Festival?

Yes. Cannes Film Festival charters are often used for hosting, meetings, parties, and accommodation near the Croisette. The earlier we plan, the better the yacht and berth options.

See Cannes Film Festival charters

Can we celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or honeymoon onboard?

Yes. These are some of the best reasons to charter. We brief the crew early so they can plan menus, decor, timing, shore reservations, and surprises properly.

Can we host a corporate event onboard?

Often, yes, but guest numbers, port rules, insurance, catering, and event permissions matter. We separate cruising charters from static event charters early so expectations are clear.

Practical Logistics

Which airport should we fly into?

Nice is the main airport for most French Riviera charters. Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, and Saint-Tropez can then be reached by car, helicopter, or tender logistics depending on the plan.

See Nice yacht charters

When can we board the yacht?

Boarding time is set by the charter agreement and the yacht's turnaround schedule. We confirm embarkation and disembarkation times before travel plans are finalized.

What should we pack?

Pack soft luggage, swimwear, light resort clothing, layers for evenings, sun protection, and shoes that work ashore. Avoid hard suitcases if possible, as storage onboard is limited.

What rules should we know before boarding?

Rules vary by yacht, but smoking, pets, footwear, guest numbers, passports, and marina requirements should be confirmed in advance. We flag these before the charter begins.
